CST alumni Eric Holden selected to 'Dynamic Dozen'

CST alumni and meteorologist Eric Holden (pictured second from the left) has been selected to join the 'Dynamic Dozen' on a race around the world, the Clipper 13-14 Yacht Race. The group of twelve, who went through a rigorous selection process over months, were selected from hundreds of candidates to take on the challenge of leading twelve amateur crews on the adventure of a lifetime.

They will also be the first to race on the new fleet of Clipper 70 yachts. Eric Holden says "This will no doubt be a gruelling 18 months and will be testing in every way imaginable. To have the support of such great friends will be a huge boost when things get tough." Eric is not a stranger to the Clipper race as his sister took part in the gruelling adventure back in 1999.

49erFX Duo Boyd and Rafuse

Canadian Sailing Team members Danielle Boyd and Erin Rafuse stopped into the Sail Canada office today, giving us the chance to catch up with the girls on their progress in the new 49er FX; the new Olympic skiff, similar to the 49er but designed for women.

Fresh off the Highway from Florida (boat on the roof and all) the girls are excited about their new rig. They've been logging lots of hours in the FX since the beginning of February. 2012 North American 49er champ Daniel Inkpen worked with the girls to get them accustomed to the boat.

Spring Break training ~ Provincial teams take on Florida

A very successful Interprovincial Training Camp with 36 young Canadian athletes was held last week! Saturday was the end of our March Break

Camp in Clearwater FL (March 8th-16th). Head Coach Agustin Ferrario says, "It has been an amazing week with 20 sailors from NS, 15 from ON and 1 from QC. Coaches Chris Hewson, Lisa Ross, Rob Frost, Murray McCullough and myself where delighted with all athletes in Laser, Radial, international 420, 29er and RSX. Great to see such large group of young talents coming up."

Their daily schedule included morning fitness on the beach, 4 hour sailing session, video debriefs and occasional group dinners with mini golf. A few lucky athletes were able to stay for another week of training!

March 5, 2013 - Kingston, ON

Activity in February continued to be focussed on the Caribbean and Florida circuits and Canadians were to the forefront in a number of regattas.

Among those were former Etchells World Champion Dirk Kneulman (ON), who took the honours in a 58 boat Etchells fleet at the Florida State Championship on Biscayne Bay. In the Caribbean, Richard Clarke (BC), went match racing with Virgin Islander Taylor Canfield in Antigua and won the Budget Marine Match Racing Cup.

Slow start to the 2013 RSX World Championships

March 2, 2013- Buzios, Brazil

The 2013 RSX World Championships kicked off with light winds and delays in Buzios, Brazil. The race committee squeezed in 2 of 3

scheduled races. Canada is represented by 2-time Olympian Zac Plavsic in the men’s fleet, and in the women’s fleet, Laurence Bonneau-Charland from Quebec.

Leading up to the event, Zac Plavsic points out that they trained in 15-30 knot North Easterlies every day for 3 weeks straight. “I felt like Bill Murray in Ground Hog Day. Our confidence in planing conditions was high, although we had a growing concern that we had not done any anaerobic pumping or light wind pumping.” Murphy's Law would have it that the World Championships were to be different conditions. Light winds and offshore South Easterlies.

Announcing the 2013 Canadian Sailing Team

March 1, 2013 - Kingston, ON

Sail Canada is excited to announce members of the 2013 Canadian Sailing Team. Miami ISAF World Cup event marked the final opportunity

for team qualification in January. This year’s lineup includes of many familiar faces including 2012 Olympians Zac Plavsic, Nikola Girke, David Wright, Greg Douglas, Danielle Dube & Luke Ramsay. Our Paralympic team are representing in full force this year, including 2008 Gold medallist Paul Tingley, SKUD bronze medallists John McRoberts /Stacie Louttit and London Paralympians Bruce Millar,Scott Lutes and Logan Campbell. There are nine new team members added to the roster this year including 3 new skiff teams. Criteria for establishing this year’s team can be found here HERE.

Support Team for 2013 Canadian Youth World Team

Sail Canada is proud to announce the support team of coaches who have been selected for the 2013 ISAF Sailing Youth World Youth Worlds logo Championships in Cyprus. These talented coaches will be working with our qualified youth sailors leading up to and at the Youth World Championships.

Agustin Ferrario (Team Leader) - Agustin is the head coach at Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. He has proved successful at creating top level youth sailors here in Canada and previously in his home country of Argentina. Agustin was also team leader for the 2012 Canadian Youth World team thus his depth of experience and expertise will be an invaluable asset to the team.
