Canadian Olympic Sailing Team News

Olympian Chris Cook was inducted into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club. Established in 1997,Chris Cook Whitby Hall of Fame the mandate is to recognize and honour the names and the accomplishments of individuals who have brought fame to the community of Whitby and to themselves through their athletic prowess and contributions to sport.

A member of the Canadian Sailing Team since 1997 Chris has earned numerous achievements in sailing including five top ten finishes in his Finn Class at the Open Finn Gold Cup (6th in 2001, 3rd in 2005, 9th in 2006, 7th in 2007, and 6th in 2008).

Chris was also the North American Champion in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009, was awarded Sail Canada Male Athlete of the Year in 2001, and Canadian Rolex Sailor of the Year in 2005. In 2005 Chris achieved a world ranking of 2nd in the Finn Class.

Radial sailor Brenda Bowskill and Olympian Luke Ramsay made a quick stop at Sail Canada headquarters on their way to Toronto for aLuke Ramsay Nacra & Brenda Bowskill Radial Radial training camp led by High Performance Director Ken Dool. This dynamic couple are both actively campaigning for Rio 2016 in separate classes however decided to team up recently to take on the F18 Southern Championships. "It's a fast intense boat. We worked well together, it was a fun experience" says Ramsay, currently partnered in the Nacra with former RSX Olympian Nikola Girke. Luke previously competed at the 2012 Olympic Games with former 470 teammate Mike Leigh. 
You may find this newly formed Nacra duo, Ramsay/Girke, in Kieler Woche this June however their main focus is the World Championships taking place in July. "We have a few more training camps in Miami and then we will put our hard work to the test." says Ramsay.

Olympic Finn sailor Greg Douglas had the opportunity to shake hands with some prominent figures in Toronto last Friday. Mayor Rob Ford andphoto credit: David Jackson PASO President Mario Vázquez Raña met at Toronto City Hall today to discuss the upcoming XVII Pan American Games taking place in 2015. Douglas was on hand to offer his support and enthusiasm for a Major Games event taking place in his own backyard. "This is a great opportunity for Canadian athletes to showcase their talent in their home country. Home court advantage is always motivational."

CST alumni and meteorologist Eric Holden (pictured second from the left) has been selected to join the 'Dynamic Dozen' on a race around thecredit: red-photographic world, the Clipper 13-14 Yacht Race. The group of twelve, who went through a rigorous selection process over months, were selected from hundreds of candidates to take on the challenge of leading twelve amateur crews on the adventure of a lifetime.

They will also be the first to race on the new fleet of Clipper 70 yachts. Eric Holden says "This will no doubt be a gruelling 18 months and will be testing in every way imaginable. To have the support of such great friends will be a huge boost when things get tough." Eric is not a stranger to the Clipper race as his sister took part in the gruelling adventure back in 1999.

Canadian Sailing Team members Danielle Boyd and Erin Rafuse stopped into the Sail Canada office today, giving us the chance to catch up with theD. Boyd and E. Rafuse girls on their progress in the new 49er FX; the new Olympic skiff, similar to the 49er but designed for women.

Fresh off the Highway from Florida (boat on the roof and all) the girls are excited about their new rig. They've been logging lots of hours in the FX since the beginning of February. 2012 North American 49er champ Daniel Inkpen worked with the girls to get them accustomed to the boat.

A very successful Interprovincial Training Camp with 36 young Canadian athletes was held last week! Saturday was the end of our March Breakcredit RNSYS race team Camp in Clearwater FL (March 8th-16th). Head Coach Agustin Ferrario says, "It has been an amazing week with 20 sailors from NS, 15 from ON and 1 from QC. Coaches Chris Hewson, Lisa Ross, Rob Frost, Murray McCullough and myself where delighted with all athletes in Laser, Radial, international 420, 29er and RSX. Great to see such large group of young talents coming up."
Their daily schedule included morning fitness on the beach, 4 hour sailing session, video debriefs and occasional group dinners with mini golf. A few lucky athletes were able to stay for another week of training!

Activity in February continued to be focussed on the Caribbean and Florida circuits and Canadians were to the forefront in a number of regattas.photo credit: RNSYS race team Among those were former Etchells World Champion Dirk Kneulman (ON), who took the honours in a 58 boat Etchells fleet at the Florida State Championship on Biscayne Bay.  In the Caribbean, Richard Clarke (BC), went match racing with Virgin Islander Taylor Canfield in Antigua and won the Budget Marine Match Racing Cup.
