Canadian Olympic Sailing Team News

A good start for Canadians on the first day of World Cup Miami. Aside from the event hosts, Canadians represent the largest contingent ofTom Ramshaw sailors in Miami and their presence was well established today. The Canucks took advantage of a day of champagne sailing (moderate breeze in sunny skies) and positioned themselves well upon the leaderboard . The Laser and Radial Canadian teams were armed today, scoring bullets in both classes. Isabella Bertold (BC) came out of the gate very strong in her first race of the event, commanding a significant lead and winning her first race with confidence. She currently sits in 2nd position behind Cagla Donertas from Turkey. Erin Rafuse from Nova Scotia rounds out the top 10 in the Radial today.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami marks the first major event for many Canadian sailors since the big show in Weymouth, the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Sailors with sights set on Rio will be testing the waters of Biscayne Bay from January 28 – February 2nd with medalCan Laser Sailor Chris Dold racing held on the final day. "Canadians will face their final opportunity for 2013 team qualification in Miami, and as such performance is a focal point for these sailors" explains Sail Canada HP Director Ken Dool. For those that have already met the performance criteria, Miami provides an opportunity to measure the progress of winter training and evaluate areas that need further focus.

Canadian Sailing Team training camp wrapped up just in time for the holidays! From the 15th to the 19th of December, the Finn boys were fullyMartin Robitaille engaged in their second training block of the winter. Having braved the cold in Toronto until the end of November, the temperatures in Miami have been a welcome change. The camp brought light to moderate breeze but every day was used to it's fullest. Early morning training sessions enabled the sailors to fit in a workout at gym in the afternoons and have plenty of rest time in the evenings. Working alongside the finns were a portion of the CST radial team and the Canadian Youth World team potentials.

CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE FUNDING FULL-STRENGTH TEAM FOR TORONTO 2015
Pan American Games investment of $2.6M will ensure best team possible
 

TORONTO – Every Canadian athlete eligible to compete in the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games will be fully supported, thanks to a record funding injection to National Sport Federations (NSFs), the Canadian Olympic Committee announced today. The one-time $2.6 million boost will be divided between all summer NSFs with sports included in the Pan American Games program.

Sail Canada would like to proudly announce the election of Canadian Sailing Team coach Brian Todd to the position of Vice President to theBrian Todd International Disabled Sailing Federation.

Brian comes from an extremely experienced position as a member of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sailing teams having coached on numerous accounts in the Windsurfing, Laser, Radial, 2.4mR, Sonar and Skud fleets. Brian has also served as an esteemed committee member for the National Windsurfing committee, was a reliable Judge and Race officer, worked with and helped to develop CYA learn to sail programs and has been an active member at Clubs across Canada's east coast.
